Privacy Information
If you prefer to be anonymous and still attend the Gatherings, here are instructions:
“You can hide your identity to a significant degree on Zoom by disabling your video and audio and changing your display name to a fictitious one before or during a meeting. While Zoom offers options to hide your camera feed and sound, you can’t become fully invisible; hosts can also implement security measures, like requiring registration or authentication, to limit anonymity. To remain anonymous on Zoom:
- Disable your video: Before joining or while in a meeting, click the “Stop Video” button to turn off your camera.
- Mute your audio: Click the “Mute” button to ensure your voice isn’t heard.
- Change your display name: Before you join, change your name in the designated box on the “Join a Meeting” screen to a temporary or guest name. You can also change your name during the meeting by right-clicking on your name in the participant list.
- Consider a generic or absent profile picture: You can use a generic profile picture or no picture at all to further reduce your visible identity.
What to know about anonymity:
- Host controls: A host can restrict access by requiring participants to register or authenticate before joining.
- Visibility: Even with your video off, your name or a generic placeholder may still appear in the participant list.
- “Hide self-view”: You can also hide your own video feed from your screen, though others will still see you if your camera is on.
To become more anonymous in a meeting:
- Hide self-view: Right-click on your own video feed and select the option to “Hide Self-View” to keep your face off your own screen.
- Use the Zoom web portal: You can set options for your caller ID to hide it when you use the Zoom app for audio calls.”
